DETALLES

OVERVIEW

Browse the beautifully preserved Old Town of Uchiko and watch traditional artisans hand-craft washi, a durable high-grade paper used for calligraphy, lanterns and sliding door screens. The Japanese first developed the washi process in the 7th century, using naturally intertwined plant fibers that strengthen the paper. As you will discover at the Tenjin Sanshi paper factory – where you can try your hand at making washi – the production method hasn’t changed enormously. It is still chemical-free and sustainable. Old Town also offers a glimpse into the past through its architecture. You will see preserved buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods along the streets and detailed reproductions in the Museum of Commercial and Domestic Life. Other highlights in Old Town include a kabuki theater and the Buddhist temple Kosho-ji, which was founded in the early 1400s. For a literal taste of Uchiko, you will stop at a farmers market, where you can dine on your own.
