OVERVIEW

Discover the rich history of kites in the city of Uchiko as then fly one before exploring the well-preserved Edo and Meiji-period architecture in Old Town. Browsing the Ikazaki Kite Museum will reveal the significance of kites in the Japanese culture as you will see ones of every imaginable shape, color and construction. You will have the opportunity to fly a kite made of paper and bamboo in the riverside field next to the museum. The historical district reflects Uchiko’s past prosperity as a center for the production of paper and wax. You can expect to visit Uchiko-za – a theater built for kabuki and bunraku performances – a well-preserved affluent residential neighborhood and Kosho-ji, a Buddhist temple known for its oversized statue of a reclining Buddha. You will also stop at a farmers market, where you may snack on your own on local products such as Uchiko pork burgers and fruit gelatos.
