Highlights of Nagasaki

DETALLES

  • 81/2
    horas Duración estimada

Visit the key landmarks in Nagasaki, most of which recognize the devastating effects of the atomic bomb that was dropped on the city in August 1945. Dejima is the exception, as this former island was constructed in 1636 to segregate the Portuguese as part of Japan’s seclusion policy that marked the Edo Period. Still, attractions that commemorate Nagasaki’s destruction from the bomb blast are most prevalent.

Most everything that you will see has been built or rebuilt since the end of World War II. The Peace Memorial Park now stands near Ground Zero and features statues and sculptures that countries throughout the world have donated. The statue of a man with his right arm pointing to the sky to indicate the continued threat of nuclear destruction is particularly moving.

You will also browse the Atomic Bomb Museum, which holds hundreds of artifacts that show the power of the bomb’s impact and contains displays on modern nuclear technology.
