OVERVIEW

Become immersed in the multi-ethnic culture of Santiago Island at attractions that reveal much about the people and the colonial past. Praia’s intriguing ethnographical museum will offer a wonderful introduction to the history of the island. The museum occupies a beautiful colonial house and contains exhibits devoted to early fishing methods, weaving and musical instruments. A walking tour through the capital of Praia will provide architectural insight, as you will pass Portuguese colonial buildings such as the town hall and the presidential palace. One of the oldest buildings in town is the 1826-built Jaime Mota Barracks, which is named for a guerilla warrior that died while fighting for the independence of the Cape Verde Islands. You will also view the more modern side of Praia along a bustling avenue that leads to the football stadium, national library and Sucupira Market. As you browse the market stalls, you will enjoy a candid glimpse of daily life.
