OVERVIEW

Explore the wonders of astronomy at the Griffith Observatory and spend free time browsing the Original Farmers Market, an institution since opening in 1934. The observatory and park below it are named for Griffith J. Griffith, an industrialist who donated the land when he died in 1919. While visiting, you might gaze through the telescopes, watch a Tesla coil demonstration and peruse the Wilder Hall of the Eye, which focuses on how people have observed the sky over the centuries. Outside, there is a different sort of star: a bust of actor James Dean, who shot many of the scenes in his breakthrough 1955 movie “Rebel Without a Cause” at the observatory. You will also enjoy an excellent view of the famed Hollywood sign. The farmer’s markets is another L.A. icon. The merchandise now includes much more than garden-fresh produce as you will find everything from art and clothing to jewelry and toys.
