Enjoy free time exploring the medieval town of Balmaseda as a prelude to dining at a former convent that grows its own organic produce. As you meander about the town’s historic quarter, you will notice that the buildings have been so beautifully preserved that it is easy to imagine life there in medieval times. Highlights include several Gothic churches and the 12th-century stone bridge that spans the Cadagua River and leads to the Cristo neighborhood. The towering turret on the bridge was built to guard the entrance to Balmaseda. Nearby, you will find San Roque, a 17th-century convent that has been repurposed as a hotel and restaurant. The dining room couldn’t be more atmospheric for your lunch of traditional Basque cuisine. It may include micuit foie gras, leek and prawn cake and beef loin on braised sweet potato. Red wine from Rioja will also be served.
