Ride a restored vintage train into the spectacularly picturesque jungle while the guides describe the history of the railroad and the fascinating story of its construction.
After departing from the pier, you will enjoy an enlightening drive to the Saborio Village, where you will board a vintage train for a wonderfully scenic ride through the countryside. The Atlantic Railroad or so-called “Jungle Train” was completed in 1890 to ship coffee and bananas directly to the sea for export, and it was a monumental feat of engineering.
As you chug along through some of the most stunning scenery in Costa Rica, you will hear the story of its arduous construction. The Costa Ricans, Chinese and Jamaicans that built the railway suffered unimaginable physical hardships until the route was finally opened.
More than 100 years later, the narrow-gauge railway is remembered mostly for the incredible scenery that it presents. You will ride over towering trestles, through seemingly endless jungle and past sprawling plantations that still grow bananas.
Because some of the terrain is so remote and difficult to access otherwise, you can expect to see all sorts of wildlife. Howler monkeys and two-toed sloths are often spotted in the tree tops, and various tropical birds are commonly seen, especially in the more elevated regions.
To enhance the experience, the guides will point out the most outstanding sights and answer questions you have regarding the flora, fauna and Costa Rican lifestyle.
Duración 3 1/4 hs.
OVERVIEW
Follow a winding trail through a dense rainforest and across sky-walk bridges that will present a unique perspective of the vibrant ecosystem. A naturalist guide will lead the way along a circuitous natural path that crosses several hanging suspension bridges, the highest being about 165 feet above the forest floor. It will be a thrill to walk across and look straight down into the deep ravine below. The naturalist will point out and describe the exotic fauna, which includes monkeys in the tree canopy and butterflies flitting about the flowering vegetation. Frogs are plentiful, including the blue-jeans frog. This species is easy to identify because of its bright-red color, except from the waist down – which is blue, as if it is wearing jeans. Colorful birds are also abundant, including toucans, motmots and trogons. Even if trogons aren’t present, you will likely observe their nests in the cavities of dead trees.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Walk high in the rainforest along a trail that passes over several suspended skywalk bridges.
• Look for wildlife in the tree canopy such as monkeys, tropical birds and exotic frogs.
• Observe other wildlife at different elevations, such as coatis and kinkajous on the forest floor.
HELPFUL HINTS
• Dress in weather-appropriate clothing.
• Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.
