Fatima was a very poor and forgotten parish until an apparition of the Virgin Mary was seen by three peasant children back in 1917. Continue on to Alfama where you’ll visit the Lisbon Cathedral -its construction started in 1147 when the city was reconquered from the Moors, by the first king of Portugal. You’ll continue towards Arrabida Natural Park which covers a small range of limestone mountains, the road across the top offers remarkable views. The park was established to protect the wild, beautiful landscape and rich variety of birds and wildlife. The name Arrabida derives from Arabic, meaning a place of prayer, and the wooded hillsides are indeed a peaceful retreat.

You will glimpse the UNESCO World Heritage site Jerónimos Monastery – an early 16th-century icon that holds the remains of Vasco da Gama – on the way to Belém Tower, a riverfront fortification that he and other Portuguese explorers such as Magellan passed on their Voyages of Discovery. Stroll to the Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology (MAAT Museum). Delight in its striking modern facade, and savor the charming contrast it presents alongside one of Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods. Finally, explore the Baixa Quarter, which will show how the area had to be completely rebuilt after a 1755 earthquake reduced it to rubble. Restauradores Square exudes history as it commemorates the restoration of the Portuguese crown in 1640 after decades of Spanish rule. Rossio Square is historical as well, but known more for its iconic wave-patterned pavement, a 19th-century design that was later copied throughout Portugal and even internationally. Still, the most popular plaza is sprawling Commerce Square, which opens to harbor and the Tagus River estuary. It was constructed as a symbolic entrance to the city after a devastating earthquake in 1755 leveled the area. The Rua Augusta Arch was added about a century later to commemorate Lisbon’s reconstruction following that earthquake.
